The GablesBuilt out of solid Totara in the 1860s for a local farmer, 'The Gables' luxury accommodation in Akaroa has been lovingly restored. It accurately captures the romanticism of the age without compromising on comfort. The wallpaper and drapes have been imported from England, and a Stanley woodstove, imported from Ireland, is used for cooking and keeps the whole house warm in winter. The specially-selected antique pieces give the house its unique atmosphere.

Your double bedroom has its own private courtyard, an en-suite bathroom and a private sitting room, which opens out onto a verandah with breathtaking views of the harbour. You'll adore the superb brass double bed and antiques.

The superb grounds have been landscaped to accentuate the magnificent views. These, together with the magnificent old oaks, walnuts, plane trees and natives, are a feature of the property.

We had a wonderful time here. You have created a beautiful sanctuary inside and out! Divine food and wine. You are gifted women with so many talents. What stands out to us is your attantion to detail and care for others. Staying here feels like staying with old friends. -- Simone and Margie, Melbourne

What a special way to finish our wedding day by being able to stay at The Gables and wake up to such a wonderful relaxing, warm, friendly and gorgeous home. Wainui is a special place in our hearts and we will return. -- Matthew and Rachel Brown

Great place, great people and definitely great food! So lovely to be warm, well-fed and generally look after. Would have liked to stay longer. -- Duncan and Alex

What can I say? You have both patiently allowed us to take over your lives and you have given so generously of time, coffees. Katies cheese and we have loved being back at The Gables with you delighting in the potager, conversation, laughter, Michi, Pia. The garden is beautiful, as is your friendship. We just hope that you get to Cornwell one day so that we can repay just a tiny part of your hospitality. -- Anne and Malcolm Sutton

Superb, fresh food prepared by two chefs. With considerable experience both here, in Europe and the UK, Lyn and Chris are women who have the necessary background and expertise to design the menus just for you and your particular tastes. Previous owners of a leading Christchurch restaurant, they bring a sense of pure joy to the culinary arts, and they now lead TOURS IN TUSCANY, TOURS IN PUGLIA and TOURS IN PIEDMONT as well as running "The Gables".

We also now offer private dinners and lunches for groups of 6-10 people. Or if you prefer, Lyn and Chris will cook for your party in your own home. Please e-mail for details. We will be happy to provide a menu and quote for the catering of your wedding or other large function.

You'll love the organic produce grown mainly in their large potager garden, their goat milk cheese and fresh eggs. Cooking is done on a woodstove, and the fresh, clean flavours are Mediterranean influenced. Another feature is the fresh, pure spring water on the property.

It's all you would expect and more.
